CAPTURING TEXTURE IN YOUR IMAGES

Texture is an important element in photography that can add depth, interest, and emotion to your images. In my journeys to Duluth, Minnesota, there were many landscape pictures taken, but also get the close details of rocks, moss, and more. With these pictures, I have been able to not only have the memories but also use them in my design work. Here are four tips for capturing texture in your photography:

LOOK FOR INTERESTING TEXTURES

When your are out shooting, be on the lookout for textures that catch your eye. They can be found anywhere, from the rough bark of a tree to the smooth surface of a lake.

USE TEXTURE TO ADD DEPTH

By incorporating texture into your images, you can create a sense of depth that draws the viewer in. This can be done by using a shallow depth of field to blur the background and focus on the texture in the foreground.

EXPERIMENT WITH LIGHTING

The way light falls on a textured surface can dramatically change the look and feel of an image. Try shooting at different times of day or using different types of lighting to see how it affects the texture in your photos.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO GET CLOSE

Sometimes the most interesting textures are found in the details. Don't be afraid to get up close and personal with your subject to capture the intricate details of the texture. This can create a striking and unique image that tells a story.

USING TEXTURES IN DESIGN

Adding textures to a design can bring many benefits. Firstly, it can make the design more visually interesting and engaging, as textures can add depth and dimensionality to the overall look. While some may use certain texture to portray emotion, for example, a rough, grainy texture might evoke feelings of ruggedness or earthiness, while a smooth, glossy texture might suggest sophistication or elegance.

In this graphic, there is an overlay using one of the above images to give a little bit of texture on the overall image.

Having a stock of textures in your back pocket can be useful. Let's get to capturing!
