OUR GRANDMOTHER- AN ORIGINAL MAKER.

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

So here I am on a Sunday afternoon, looking for some writing inspiration. I started thinking back, just a short bit, to what I accomplished over the weekend. I am in the process of overhauling my crafting area in my tiny little rental town home, and it has been quite the process. I have been looking at creative ways to store all of my supplies (a stockpile that continues to grow- go figure!) that is practical, but also aesthetically pleasing. I had been making good progress until it came time to tackle my yarn stock pile- something that I have recently acquired. I have purchased most of the yarn, but Elisa recently gave me a big tote of her yarn because she is making room in her baby nursery (?!? more to come on this subject... 😉), and she told me that some the skeins came from our Grandmother. This got me to thinking- growing up I remember frequently going to my Grandmother’s house (sometimes everyday because she lived right across the road from us) and we would spend the afternoon together baking, reading, playing the organ, going for a walk, or just visiting. So many of my childhood memories are of sitting on her couch, front porch, or at her kitchen table- and I wish I would’ve realized what a blessing it was to have her in my life at that time. In ways she was one of my best friends because I could tell her anything and she would listen to me, give me advice, and we would always end our visits in a hug. She was such a special woman and I am happy that I have some many fond memories that I will get to cherish forever! You might be thinking, “what does this have to do with yarn?” Well- I’m getting there! Throughout her life, my Grandmother was an avid sewer and crocheter, a term that is now referred to as a “maker”. She was a home maker, dress maker, doll clothes maker, quilt maker, and the list goes on. Many of my childhood dresses and dolly blankets were hand-crafted by her. While I enjoyed WATCHING her work, I never wanted to learn to make anything by myself- and let me tell you, she sure TRIED to teach me her craft, but I was never interested. Looking back now, I wish I would’ve taken the time to learn from this talented woman the many skills that she had to share. In the present, I love to crochet (Elisa taught me the same way Grandmother taught her), crafting, and sewing which is growing on me 😊. Every time I grab my crochet hook and yarn or thread my sewing machine, I know that she is looking down on me, smiling, her eyes bright, and happy to know that I have learned to do something that she loved to do her entire life. I also smile, knowing that she is proud of me and everything I have accomplished so far in my life. I look forward to having her yarn and being able to create something that she will forever be a part of 😊. Rest easy, Grandmother- I know you are still a maker up in Heaven 😇

Here are a few pictures from my projects over the last year or so since I started crocheting. They aren't perfect and I thought maybe I shouldn't share them, but I am proud of each and every one of them and how far I've come!
